East Bay Green Jobs Corps/Brighter Futures Program
What is East Bay Green Jobs Corps/Brighter Futures?
The East Bay Green Jobs Corps (EBGJC)/Brighter Futures (BF) is a training and education program designed to help youth, ages 18-24, to get the skills to further their education and enter green careers. EBGJC/BF is a collaboration between Solar Richmond, Rising Sun Energy Center and Berkeley City College.
EBGJC/BF is a 16 week program that combines both classroom and work experience. By participating in EBGJC, students:
-Learn job readiness, communication and leadership skills
-Improve English, math, and computer skills
-Participate in energy efficiency and solar internships
-Gain knowledge in fields of solar and energy efficiency
-Earn a stipend
-Receive Mindfulness training from the Mind Body Awareness Project and practice a variety of mindfulness and yoga techniques
-Build eco-literacy and civic engagement
-Earn 10 units of college credit (non-transferable)
Originally an eight-week program, EBGJC recently received funding from the U.S. Department of Labor to expand to 16-weeks. Solar Richmond's portion of the program, Brighter Futures, has received generous funding from the Thomas J. Long Foundation and the Common Sense Fund, the latter which will allow Solar Richmond to work with the Mind Body Awareness Project to develop curriculum to address the trauma our participants have experienced.
