Why
We know that more is needed in addition to the hard-skills training that we already provide. Despite the enthusiasm and
media that our program receives, only 1-2 graduates of our program are currently getting full-time employment straight out
of the trainings out of 15-20 graduates. This simply is not enough. We advocate for our program graduates and provide them
with our many connections in the solar field, however, a more structured support program is necessary to help our graduates
secure and maintain jobs in the solar market.

The Internship Model
Our paid internship program is a way in which reputable solar companies can test out our graduates on a risk-free trial
basis. This model is powerful because it moves the job interview from the conference room to the rooftop, where our graduates
have confidence wielding their tools and demonstrating their skills. Though perhaps not as articulate or well versed in environmental
lingo as the college graduates or industry professionals that they are often competing with, they will have the chance to
prove themselves during this 10-week trial period. With our encouragement and guidance, they will have a chance to show their
good work ethic, teamwork and drive to become part of the solar market.

Need for case management
Solar Richmond seeks to bring more resources to the table, providing soft skills training with the support of a case manager.
The case manager will monitor their progress throughout the internship period, staying in close contact with them and providing
encouragement and advice along the way. After the internship has come to an end, they will help graduates seek and obtain
a permanent job. Throughout this period, they will help create polished resumes and ensure that our graduates are easy to
contact by phone. In essence, the case manager will give them the confidence they lack to get started in an increasingly competitive
field.
